The Great Southern Discussion Club
Fostering Regional Dialogue and Cooperation

The Issues
In Australia today, we have many great problems that face us. Many of them include our own understanding as an Australian, how different groups within our society interact with each other, Australia's interactions with the rest of the world (such as the BRICS Countries), and our economic growth. Australia also has issues in truly understanding the dynamics and intentions of our friends that are the Pacific Islands Nations, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and our role in assisting greater cooperation between all parties. Also, as far as I understand, there is a lack of a civil society discussion mechanism between the people of Pacific Island's nations, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, and Australia. The idea that I will speak about in this text will not be a grand solution to all the concerns within the categories I just mentioned. However, it would hopefully be one tool in assisting to find solutions to many of the issues within the previously mentioned categories.
A Discussion Platform
The concept I speak of is The Great Southern Discussion Club. A mechanism that would resemble parts of a Press Club and take inspiration from the Valdai Discussion Club, whilst also not being an institution exclusive to owners, professionals, or managers. In other words, ensuring that average people have a capacity to participate too. Before I mention any of the additional particulars of The Great Southern Discussion Club, we should learn about the Valdai Discussion Club. I assume here that you understand the general mechanisms of a Press Club, so I will skip explaining this.
International Inspiration
The Valdai Discussion Club is an international framework for dialogue between Russian and global intellectuals. Established in 2004, its mission is to promote unbiased scientific analysis of political, economic, and social events in Russia and the world.
Key Characteristics:
Annual meetings, typically held in autumn (our spring), featuring Russian and foreign journalists, politicians, and scientists.
Conference themes vary each year, focusing on Russia’s foreign and domestic policy.
The Russian President’s speech and press conference are integral parts of the conference.
Approximately 40 foreign experts, including think-tank representatives, academics, journalists, and politicians, are invited to Russia for two-day discussions with Russian counterparts.
Additional events/conferences throughout the year.
History:
The club was named after Lake Valdai, located near Veliky Novgorod, where its first meeting took place. Since its inception, the Valdai Discussion Club has become a significant platform for Russia’s intellectual elite to engage with international experts and shape the country’s global perspective.
Mission:
The club’s mission is to create an international framework for leading experts to debate on Russia’s role in the world, promoting dialogue and independent analysis. It serves as a platform for Russian and international intellectuals to engage in open and constructive discussions on pressing global issues.
Our Club
The Great Southern Discussion Club can take on many similar characteristics of the Valdai Discussion Club within the context of:
The practical realities facing Australia, Pacific Island nations, Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
Class relations, and how all classes can be utilised for general economic growth for all.
Moving beyond the US centric unipolar moment.
Innovative and practical solutions to general economic growth.
How it Works
Those contextual issues should be discussed at events and in formats that are relevant to as many people participating in the institution as possible, including but not limited to:
In-person Events:
Regular addresses to club participants.
Group discussions.
Facilitate networking events amongst all club participants from all differing groups available.
Hold celebrations of key dates.
Cultural exchanges.
Online:
Discussions, both exclusive to club participants and broadcast.
Broadcast Q&A sessions.
Forums.
Independent Social Media systems (Fediverse).
Mainstream Social Media promotion.
E-News.

Outcomes
Using the activities above and reflecting upon the aforementioned contexts Club participants are encouraged to:
To engage with interested stakeholders to bring ideas to fruition.
Promote the development of joint projects between nations in areas like environmental sustainability, trade, cultural preservation, technical exchange, media exchange or education.
- Which could be research-based, economic, or social initiatives that promote collaboration beyond dialogue.
Using the information learned from the activities above and collaboration with Club participants, The Great Southern Discussion Club will create a formal mechanism for policy recommendations that can be presented to relevant governments or institutions. This would elevate the discussions and help ensure that they lead to tangible outcomes.
Club Mission
Our mission takes inspiration from the Valdai Discussion Club, but is relevant to our context.
The Club’s Mission is to:
Create a civil society discussion platform between the people of Pacific Island's nations, Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Australia, encouraging and facilitating participation of people from all walks of life.
Promoting dialogue and independent analysis beyond the United States led unipolar moment.
Encourage participants to utilise the unique mechanisms available to them in collaboration with others to create realistic and productive outcomes for all.
Engage in open and constructive discussions on pressing global issues, affecting our region.
